When walking into a casino, what is that slim hope that everyone hangs on to? It's the dream that we will walk out of the casino not forty dollars lighter than when we walked in, but wealthy beyond our wildest dreams, wealthy in a way that only TV millionaires like Thurston Howe III and Scrooge McDuck were wealthy.
In the casino there are two kinds of bets: those that make the casino money quickly, and those that make the casino money slowly. As a bettor trying to walk away with a few extra dollars in your pocket, the best thing to do is to go for the bets that make the casino slow money and see if you can't get lucky.
It is recommended that players new to the game of craps (and even those who have been around awhile) stay away from the bets in the middle of the layout. The reason for this is that the bets in the middle of the table are proposition bets and are under the direct control of the stickman. Except for the "hardways," these are one-time bets, and if the player wins, the payouts might seem high, but they are long shots that are not paid off at true odds.
Any Seven bet: This is the absolutely worst bet on the felt. On the surface it does not seem that bad. It is a simple bet. The player is betting that the next roll of the dice will be a 7 in any combination. If it rolls, the bet is paid 4:1. If any other number rolls, the player loses. Since the 7 rolls more than any other single number, this should be a solid bet. In reality, there are 36 possible ways that the dice can land, from one way each for a 2 or a 12 to five ways each for the 6 and 8. The 7 can roll six different ways. So, out of a possible 36 different combinations, 30 will lose, six will win. That's 30:6 or 5:1. The payout is 4:1, yet the odds against the player are 5:1.
