The exact origin of baccarat is rather murky. The fact that the name means the same thing in both French and Italian leads many to believe that the game was, obviously, a creation of France or Italy. Evidence points more strongly to Italy then it does to France, and the game seems to be an invention of the Middle Ages. At that point in time the game was being played with Tarot cards, based on an old Etruscan ritual.
The first appearance of baccarat in France was in the late 1400's. The game quickly became a favorite of the French royalty, who had an exclusive hold on the game for a long period of time. After creating the popular version called "Chemin de fe", the French exported the game of baccarat to England, where the rules were changed and the game became the version that identify in the current European version of the game.
From Europe, baccarat came to South America and Cuba via trade ships. It wasn't until the 1950's though, that the game made it to the United States. It was introduced by an organized crime figure named Tommy Renzoni, who popularized it in Las Vegas.
A more contemporary wrinkle that has been added to the game is the creation of the highly popular mini baccarat. This form of the game allows for smaller table stakes and even easier game procedures. On the internet, both baccarat and min-baccarat are thriving with players who have never even played the game in a real casino. |
