Optional Splits
The strategy for an Optional Split is in fact rather simple, assuming there is no double permitted after splitting pairs. If that is the case, the proper plays are:
Aces: Bet both against all dealers' cards
Tens: Never bet on split 10s unless the count is high enough to warrant the play.
Nines: Bet both vs. 2-6 and 8 only
Eights: Bet both vs. 3-7 only
Sevens: Bet both against a 6 only
Sixes: Never bet both
Fives: Never bet both, if the player is dumb enough to split
Fours: Same as fives
Threes: Bet both only against 5 and 6
Twos: Same as threes

Splitting & Doubling
This strategy is identical to when the dealer first checks to see if he has a natural. The only difference is when the dealer wins both bets if he gets a Blackjack later on. The biggest mistake players make is not hitting on a hand of 12 against a dealer's up card of 2. By hitting, the player reduces the overall loss from 29.2% to 25.3%. While this might not seem like a lot, it is a moderately common hand and it all adds up in the end.

Splitting Tens
Many novice players operate under the mistaken belief that the objective of Blackjack is to bust the dealer, and that the best way of doing so is by splitting tens when the dealer is showing 6. First of all, the object of the game is to beat the dealer, not bust them. And it never pays to split tens, no matter what the dealer may be showing. A pair of tens is a 20, and by splitting the player ends up two hands of 10, which requires an additional bet. Simply by standing on 20 the player can expect to win 67.7% of all the money bet; but by splitting the player's expected return drops to 55.6% or 27.8% per hand.

A final hint to players: if the dealer is required to stand on A-6, hit an 11 against a dealer's up-card of Ace. If the dealer is required to hit A-6, double 11 against the dealer's hand.
