Over the past years casinos have expanded the definition of cheating from using outside help, devices, and strategies that involve switching the chips at the last second to anyone who uses their brain for the purpose God intended - thinking. Card counting in most casinos is considered a violation of casino policy. The fact that they have policies that outlaw any sort of effective use of the brain leads one to believe that the only policy the casinos actually agree with is one that involves you cheerfully handing over your wallet and uttering the phrase "Thank you sir, may I have another" after your financial spanking. The truth is card counting works. That is why it is feared by casinos. If you are going to card count, be sure that you do it in a manner that doesn't look like you are involved in this illegal act of intellect.

To detect if somebody is card counting is not the easiest task in the world. There is no special piece of technology that lights up when folks start to use more brain power than it is necessary to order a vodka martini. To catch card counters, casino workers employ a very special type of profiling.

Whether it is fair or not, there is some behavior that has become associated with card counters. Anyone displaying various traits and winning more than the casino thinks is normal will fall under suspicion and be quickly escorted from the premises. The net they cast probably, and unjustly, snags as many innocent people as it does card counters (this is assuming we accept that card counters are doing anything wrong). Below are some behaviors to avoid if you don't want to be accused of card counting and unceremoniously thrown from the casino:
  • Wear a poker face. The exertion of doing math usually has an effect on the human face. ome folks look like they have a migraine, other look like they just sucked a lemon. Regardless of what your face does when in deep thought, the best course of action is to stop it. Keep your face still. Don't let the effort your brain is putting out show on your countenance.

  • Order drinks. Most folks who count cards don't order drinks. They wisely choose not to pump alcohol through the part of their body that gives them an edge over the house. Of course not ordering drinks is a dead giveaway for card counters. The monitors know that most counters are tea tottlers. It won't hurt if you order the occasional drink. Just nurse it for a while.

  • Avoid big bets. The natural instinct of any gambler is to bet big when the odds favor them. To do anything else is simply counter-intuitive. With that said, avoid making big bets every time the count favors you. Make some big bets, but try not to put a long string of them together. A number of big bets in a row (especially ones that pay off) will tip off the monitors that something is not right at the table.

  • Don't table hop. Being good at card counting not only gives a player a unique perspective on when the deck is in their favor, but also some insight into when the deck is against them. Logically when the deck is cold, most counter take their chips and head from greener pastures. This is like ringing the dinner bell for the monitors. The best thing to do is stay seated. Make small bets until the cards turn back in your favor.

  • Don't obsess over your chips. There is a stereotype of counters that says they become very focused on their chips. They are very careful to make sure the stacks are just perfect, and everything is in neat order. This may or may not be true, but it is one of the things monitors look for. A little sloppiness goes a long way in this case. Perhaps slightly messier stacks will help you to avoid detection.
It is actually unfair that somebody who uses their brain must take precautions to avoid getting caught thinking, but the casinos make the rules. One of these rules is that they can eject anybody for any reason. Following the tips above will help you fly under the radar, at least for a little while.
