The reason many of us are not good at card counting is simply that we are just not bright enough to carry it off during a live game of blackjack. Thankfully there are professionals out there that make a special effort to help those of us who have a library full of books that end with the words "For Dummies".

Harvey Dubner simplified card counting for all of us, and now this effective system is intellectually accesible to anyone who doesn't live within the borders of Washington DC. To start learning this system, let's begin with the card values:

2, 3, 4, 5, 6Count +120 in the Deck
7, 8, 9Count 012 in the Deck
10, J, Q, K, ACount -120 in the Deck

As you can see in the chart above, the cards have been broken down into three groups along with how many of those cards in the deck.

In the first group we have the small cards. There are twenty of these 2 - 6 cards in a normal deck of 52 cards. For the purpose of the system these cards are assigned a count of +1.

In the middle we have 7 – 9. These 12 cards are obviously of a higher numerical value than the small cards, and are assigned a count of 0.

The big cards are 10 – A. This, of course, includes all the face cards. These 20 cards have a count of -1.

When using this system, the counting will resemble a tennis match, the counts going back and forth. As you watch the cards come out, there will be some simple math to do. At the start with a new deck, the count is zero. If you are dealt a K and a 6, and the dealer is showing 5, the count is as follows: -1 +1 +1 = +1. With the count at +1 that means that there are more high cards in the deck than low.

Three cards are not a very good gauge of things, but the ideal circumstance is that you want to be in + territory. This means the chances of you getting a high card have increased. This knowledge should give you an edge when playing blackjack.
