Anybody who knows card player Derek Webb probably hates him. Not because he is particularly obnoxious, but because he basically makes his living by sitting around and dreaming up new games to play with a deck of cards. One of his most popular innovations is the game of Hit and Win.
This game seems to have been invented to help poker players transition over to the game of blackjack. In the opinion of some, this is 21 played with training wheels. There is skill involved, but even the most basic player can quickly get a hold on it, and be playing in a competent manner rather quickly.
Hit and Win is played with type of standard cards that are common to any game of Texas Holdem. In most cases there are at least four decks in play at one time. As always, this is done to throw off the card counters. Anyone who has played blackjack will recognize the card values, because they are no different in this game. The value of an Ace is either 1 or 11, and 10 card is exactly as the card says - 10. All face cards also have a value of 10. Card value is what counts in this game; the suit of the card is a non-issue.
A round begins with a player making a bet in the designated space on the table. Two cards are dealt to the player face up while the dealer receives his cards face down. The following options are available to the player:
- Hit. If the player believes he will benefit from another card, he can take a hit. This means he's dealt another card.
- Stand. If the player is happy with his cards, he can stand and take no more cards. A player can stand at any point in the game.
- Double. The player may place another bet in the designated betting section. This essentially doubles his bet. The player may double on any two card hand, and he may also get more than one card after he doubles. When doubling, at least one card must be taken.
- Split. If you have a pair, you can split them. A player may double after he has already split, and Aces get more than one card.
When the players are finished doing their thing, the dealer turns their cards over. Like proper blackjack, the dealer must hit on all hands that are below 16. They also must stand on any hand 17 or above. Soft or hard is irrelevant.
The payout structure is as follows:
| Player's Hand | Dealer's Hand | Payoff to Player |
| Bust | Immaterial | -1 |
| Player's hand is equal to or less than 21 | The dealer busts | 0 (push) |
| Player's hand is less than 21 | Dealer's hand is greater than player's hand, but less than (or equal to 21) | -1 |
| Player's hand is less than or equal to 21 | Dealer's hand is less than player's hand | Subtract the dealer's hand from the player's hand and pay the player the difference. For example, if the player has 20 and dealer has 17, the player receives +3 units |
| Player's hand is greater than 18 or less than or equal to 21 (No Blackjack) | Dealer's hand equals player's hand | 0 (push) |
| Player's hand is 17 | Dealer's hand is 17 | +1 |
| Player has a blackjack | Dealer has 21 that is not a blackjack | +1 |
