Knowing where the cards are in a deck would give a player a huge advantage when playing blackjack. Unfortunately, card games cannot be approached in a manner similar to the way Marlin Perkins of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom would approach tracking a ring footed lemur. Marlin would just put a beeping collar on the confused animal and keep track of the movement. Putting a foreign object on a card to figure out where in the deck it is may result is the sort of special attention from the pit boss that would land your face on a milk carton. There is a technique that can be used to keep track of where a card is though.
It is called Shuffle Tracking. Theoretically, a player can predict exact location of every card that has made an appearance on the table. This is done by a making a mental note of their values as they are put back in the rack, and by paying attention to how they are shuffled before being returned to play.
Dealers shuffle cards as part of their living, and the sheer act of repetition has allowed most of them to fall into predictable patterns. As the cards are cut and shuffled, there is an average of five cards between any two cards that have been dealt back to back previously. For example, if a Jack of Spades was directly followed by an Ace of Hearts in the game before the shuffle, there will now be five cards between those two cards in the deck after the shuffle.
This is a difficult skill to learn and the mental gymnastics are certainly the sort of thing that migraines are made of, but if you can perfect this technique, it will greatly shift the odds in your favor. |
