Simply giving up is not something most people are very comfortable with. Who would have thought the act of running away could actually be a powerful tool in the game of blackjack. Most casinos don't allow a player to surrender. The idea is that once you are engaged in a hand you must stay the course till the bitter end. But some casinos do allow players to back out of a situation where they don't like their chances of victory. When looking at your cards in relation to what the dealer is showing, the player can simply utter the word "surrender". Backing out of the hand will cost the player half of their bet. Most consider this a small price to pay when the only other possiblity is to lose the whole thing in a no win situation.
Because you are giving up half your bet without a fight when surrendering, think before you do this. Some players have gotten into their heads that surrendering is a "get out of jail free" card, and play it early and often. They begin to lean on it, and only go to the end of a hand when they have a sure thing. When used as a strategy instead of something to do under extreme circumstances, surrendering will only leadyour bankroll to death.
Here are the proper conditions for a surrender:
- When playing a multi-deck game, you are holding a 16 that is not made up with a pair of 8s, and the dealer has an upcard of a 9, 10 or ace, this would be a good time to surrender. If you are playing a single deck game, don't surrender against the 9.
- If your cards total 15, and the dealer has an upcard of 10, surrendering could be the right decision too. |
