Slot machines are the biggest money-maker for casinos, with approximately 65% of the average casino’s profits generated by slot machine play. The operation of a slot machine is simplicity itself. All a player has to do is put in their money, pull the handle and wait to see if they win. Unlike the table games, with their intimidating rules, a person doesn’t need to know anything about the game before they play.

Players should be aware that the slot machine makes money for the casino by paying out less than it takes in. In some states, such as Nevada and New Jersey, the minimum amount to be returned is regulated. (In Nevada its 75%, in New Jersey 83%.) However, slot payback percentages in those states are actually much higher, with New Jersey averaging 92% and Nevada 94%. This means that for every $1 a player puts in an Atlantic City slot machine they will lose 8 cents, and in Las Vegas they will lose 5 cents.

Every slot machine contains a random number generator which is used to control the payback percentage. When a casino orders a slot machine from the manufacturer there is a list of percentage paybacks for each machine ranging from 98% to 85% and the casino must choose one from that list. In nearly every situation, casinos will place a higher denomination chip in the higher denomination machines, which means that the nickel machines will get the computer chips programmed to 87% payouts while the twenty-five dollars ($25) machines get the chips programmed for 98% payouts.

As for the Random Number Generator (RNG) itself, it is a little computer chip that constantly works to generate number combinations on a random basis, producing hundreds of combinations each second. When a player pulls the handle or pushes the spin button, the RNG stops and the combination it stops on is used to determine where the wheels will stop in the pay window. There is no way of knowing what a slot machine is programmed to play just by looking at it.

The best way to succeed at slots is to study the pay-out schedules posted on the machines and focus on those that reward players with a bonus for betting the maximum number of coins, and to locate a high-paying machine that is on a “good cycle”, meaning it has been programmed to pay out more than average. The simplest method is identical to baseball—if you play a machine three times in a row and strike out each time, then simply move to the next machine over and start again.
