Craps, like most other casino games, has a muddled, but very interesting history attached to it. Today there are several versions of how the game originated, and there is no definitive version is known to be completely true.
Of the myriad number of theories that talk about the origin of this game, one popular theory is that the game evolved from an ancient practice of rolling bones. The bones (usually of a chicken) were rolled to reveal the will of the gods. Dice games would come from these rather macabre origins. The dice would now represent what the bones once did, but without the little bits of meat attached.
Another story about the origins of the game has it evolving an early Arabian game. This game would have come to Europe as the Crusaders returned home from the Middle East. Once it had passed through England and France, it eventually made its way to the United States with the first French and English settlers to come to the New World. This is where we get to the one piece of information that historians do agree on when discussing the origins of craps. Most people estimate the game was brought over to the United States from Europe around the 1700s. |
