Like proper poker, Pai Gow is played with a standard 52 card deck. The only difference is that one joker is added to the deck (bringing the total number of cards to 53). The only way the joker can be used in Pai Gow Poker is as an Ace, or as a piece of a straight, flush, or a straight flush.

This game starts by dealing every player at the table seven cards. Players will divide their seven cards into two hands. One of these hands will be a five card hand, the other a two card hand. The idea is to make the best possible poker hand out of your two hands. The best possible two card hand that a player can make is obviously a pair of aces. Conversely, the best 5 card hand that can be made will be a Royal Flush.

As mentioned before, the player is to make the best possible hands out of their 7 cards, but the 5 card hand must be higher in value than the 2 card hand. So, if your 2 card hand is a pair of kings, your five card hand must be at least a pair of Aces or higher. Violation of this rule will result in an automatic loss for the player.

Now that you have made your two hands, we go on to how to win the game. The object of Pai Gow Poker is for both the player's hands to be higher in value than the Banker's 2 hands. If both the player's hands exceed the banker's in value, the player wins. If the player wins one hand, but losses the other, this considered a push. The win cancels out the loss and no money changes hands. If the player and the banker have one hand that is identical, this is called a tie. All ties go to the banker. This may sound unfair and give the banker an unfair advantage, but because any player can be the banker, it all evens out in the end.
