The term "Oscar's Grind" sounds like a special, house blend of coffee that might be served at Mr. Hooper's store on Sesame Street. The reality is that it is a Roulette strategy that comes from the 1965 book The Casino Gambler's Guide. Allan Wilson, the Guide's author, met a gambler named Oscar who opened Allan the secret to win at Roulette.
Oscar had an impressive bankroll, which may or may not have been the product of his system, and enough confidence in his system to play with big money. After Wilson ran over a quarter of a million simulations, he found that the the system had some merit, but luck was still one of the biggest factors.
Luck is obviously the major factor when you play this game. What system you are playing when lady luck is smiling on you is completely a personal choice. If you want to try Oscar's Grind, and hope things to go your way, here is how the system works.
One unit is bet on an even money bet. Because the aim of this system is to win one unit, if you win on that first spin, you start from scratch again. If you lose, the next bet will be exactly the same as the one the house just took from you. If you win, the next bet you make will be one unit larger than your previous winning bet.
The ultimate aim of this system is to have a profit of one unit per sequence. Once you have reached a profit of one unit, you start the process from the beginning. This is the least aggressive of the Roulette systems, so it helps you manage your losses until luck does smile on you. This is the only advantage to Oscar's Grind. The table below gives a pretty good idea of how the whole thing should work.
| Unit Bet and the Outcome | Accumulated Loss/Win |
| Bet 1 unit and lose | -1 unit |
| Bet 1 unit and lose | -2 units |
| Bet 1 unit and lose | -3 units |
| Bet 1 unit and lose | -4 units |
| Bet 1 unit and win | -3 units |
| Bet 2 units and win | -1 unit |
| Bet 2 units and lose | -3 units |
| Bet 2 units and lose | -5 units |
| Bet 2 unit and win | -3 units |
| Bet 3 unit and win | 0 |
| Bet 1 unit and win | +1 unit |
