First find the machines that offer the highest returns. One of the best of these is the 9/6 Jacks or Better machine. Jacks or Better refers to the fact that a player will not win anything from the machine unless he or she has at least a pair of Jacks. The 9/6 refers to the payback schedule. Each machine can have a different payback schedule and there are at least 20 different kinds of payback schedules available on Jacks or Better machines. The two most common in Vegas are 8/5 and 9/6. Their payoff schedules are identical except that there are better pay offs for Full Houses and Flushes. The payback on a 9/6 for a perfect play is 99.5%, while on an 8/5 the identical play is 97.3%. 9/6 video poker machines can usually be found on the quarter level in downtown Vegas, and on the Strip at $1 and higher. It is difficult to find 9/6 machines outside of Nevada, however.

If the player doesn’t have access to a 9/6 Jacks or Better, it is recommended he or she try finding an 8/5 Jacks or Better Progressive. These play identical to other 8/5 games, except that the Royal Flush pays a jackpot amount that is displayed on the meter above the machine. The jackpot builds until someone hit a royal flush, then is re-set to zero and continues to rebuild. If the jackpot on a twenty-five (25) cent is less that $2,240, then don’t bother.

It is wise to restrict video poker play to the same kind of machine, as each video poker machine has its own particular brand of strategy. What works on a Jacks or Better game is far different from a Deuces Wild game.

Players should always bet the maximum on machines returning 100% or more because it will allow the player to earn bonus coins when they hit the Royal Flush. For example, a royal flush in a 9/6 machine with 1 coin played receives 250; with 2 coins 500; 3 coins 750; for 4 coins 1,000, and 5 (the maximum) 4,000. As a Royal Flush can be expected once every 40,400 hands on a 9/6 machine; once every 40,200 on an 8/5, and once every 32,700 hands on an 8/5 progressive. Although the odds are high, the bonus makes it worth the risk.
