How does one become a legend? Kellen Winslow of the San Diego Chargers accomplished this when he was carried off the field on a stretcher during the 1981 playoffs only to return minutes later to block a field goal. Somewhere out there is an anonymous man who in younger days was the pizza delivery boy the night Marilyn Monroe was feeling lonely, and needed some attention. There is no name to this legend, but delivering a pizza to the history's brightest sex symbol and not leaving till morning is the sort of thing that people talk about for decades after the event. Vegas is rich with legends, but none are bigger than that of Archie Karas, the only gambler who truly beat the city.
Karas was a Greek immigrant who, like so many, saw America as a land of opportunity. Being a hardcore gambler though, opportunity to him had a slightly different meaning than it would for most of us. His gambling career ran along the same path as millions of others' who play games of chance for a living. He would win; he would lose it all, pull himself up an start again. In 1992 he was in one of the valleys that gamblers so often find themselves in. He entered the Vegas city limits with $50 to his name, and a need to get himself out of his current rut.
After borrowing $10,000 from a friend and fellow gambler, Archie went on an all-out assault that is only referred to in hushed tones as "The Run". Playing everything from pool, to cards, to craps he took his $10,000 bankroll and over the course of six months turned it into an awe-inspiring seventeen million dollars.
During this run he took on the best the city had to offer. World Class poker players came to him with hopes of ending the run, and went away broke. Pool players who competed on the world stage found themselves victimized by Karas to the tune of millions of dollars. The casinos even came away bloodied by this wild run.
Whatever else happens in his life, Archie Karas is forever a gambling legend. His exploits will probably never be repeated. |
