If cards were a religion than Doyle Brunson would be the Moses of poker. Much like the legendary Jewish historical figure, the Doyle Brunson story starts from some rather humble beginnings.
He started off being raised in poverty in his family's rural Texas home. He was a very athletic young man though, and escaped the hardship of his home-life went to college on basketball and track scholarships. Like so many kids who go to school for athletics pursuits, Doyle became a professional athlete. An career in the NBA was not to be though. Before he could even suit up and play with the then-Minneapolis Lakers he shattered his leg in an accident at the gypsum factory where he was working pre-season. His leg never did heal properly, and is a problem to this day. His competitive drive could not be killed so easily though and he simply switched from basketball to poker.
Today Brunson is the winner of ten World Series of Poker Championships, a prolific author whose books; SuperSystem and SuperSystem II are considered required reading by anyone who is serious about poker, and is widely considered the best poker player who ever lived. Not bad for a poor boy from Texas. |
