If it were not for the fact that we can prove he existed, the legend of Johnny Moss would be twisted to create a Paul Bunion type character. Only instead of an Ax in one hand and a big blue ox by his side, Johnny would be sporting a full house and a cocktail waitress.
As a young boy Johnny Moss learned the ins and outs of from a group of cheaters. Instead of following his shady methods of his tutors Moss set out to carve out a good reputation as a skilled and legitimate player. This background in dirty tricks did serve him well though. He was intimately familiar with the methods of cheating that other players would attempt to use on him. His skill at identifying cheaters landed him a job at a local saloon to watch over games and make sure they were played fair.
When he went off on his own as a professional gambler, the early goings were not easy. Many of the places he played were very dangerous. For this reason Johnny regularly came to the table armed. There was one icident when Moss was playing in Oklahoma when he noticed a peep hole in the ceiling. Somebody was behind the peephole relaying information about cards to a player at the table. Moss, knowing there is only one way to deal properly with cheaters, threatened to shoot the man in the ceiling. Unfortunetly the threat was not taken seriously. Shots were fired and the person behind the peep hole was wounded by Johnny.
Moss climbed the ladder, victory by victory. Eventurlly he was regarded as the best player in the world. In 1949 Casino owner Benny Binion set up a poker match between the superpowers of the day. The game would be a five month marathon of Johnny Moss vs. Nick "The Greek". After losing an estimated four million dollars, Nick "The Greek" sent up the white flag and uttered the words "Mr. Moss, I have to let you go."
As poker grew and became mainstream, Johnny moved on to the public stage. The first World Series of Poker was set up by Moss's old acquaintence Benny Binion in 1970. Pitted against six of the sports top players, Moss walked away as the first WSOP Main Event Winner. What makes this acheivement even more meaning ful is that he was declared the winner by his peers at the table. This was the official acknowledgement of Johnny Moss as the best in the world by the poker elite. |
