SAGE's playing card graphics are similar to a standard deck, and its game presentation is a fair attempt at simulating the appearance of a casino game, with red buttons corresponding to the casino game keys. SAGE deals all five cards simultaneously, but the dealt cards have to be held using the Hold/Cancel button rather than clicking on the card(s). While this more closely simulates the casino game, it's not as convenient as clicking on the card with a mouse. There is no alert when the deal gives the player a made hand. The sound effects that accompany a winner are a series of beeps. There are 18 built in games, although many of them are variations on Joker Poker and Deuces Wild games (6 each).
There is a training feature players can turn on or off that causes a window to pop up every time there is a mistake. Players have to exit the pop-up and select 'analyze hand' from the menu bar, since you can not go directly to the analyzer. SAGE will analyze any game the player sets up by changing the payoffs, but this does not include the ability to consider kickers or bonuses for anything except quads.
SAGE was one of the first commercially available software to generate a written strategy. Although it does not currently generate strategy for wild card games, an upgrade is supposedly in the works. Aside from this, it can also be used to build a strategy using the hand analysis feature, which compares the values of various holdings.
All in all, SAGE is a relatively decent means of practicing one's skills at video poker, given its price, especially if the player has an older computer. |
